2013 is the year to Rise Up! and Take our Stand! I believe that it is essential for all of us to resolve to do this because of the wave of battles that are escalating, both here in our nation and around the world.
Our families, our liberties, including religious freedom, our Constitution and fundamental moral and ethical standards are under seize, and it will take more of us rising up and getting engaged in order for us to win this war against all that we hold sacred.
We've won some battles, and we've lost some. We are winning some, and losing some right now, and the outcome overall will rest upon which side is more dedicated, devoted and engaged.
Someone posted on my facebook wall last week a poster with these words, "If you don't fight for what you love, don't cry for what you lose."
So, can we do? I think it's what all of us actually want at the beginning of each new year when we resolve, or at least think about resolving, to 'do better...be better' -- to not live in unhealthy, unproductive, uncaring ways in the new year. And that’s all good, but I'd like to propose that we flip it to the positive...to resolve ‘to not have any regrets this year.' That is a stronger motivator, one that holds more power to be successful in our resolve.
I believe three things that are essential to put on our list ‘to not regret’ are:
We need to pray more (2 Chron. 7:14). We need to care more. We need to do more.
I know, I can hear the sighs and the cries… ‘how can I possibly do anymore?”
You’re right. There are so many responsibilities pulling on each of us that even just thinking about ‘getting engaged more’ can be overwhelming. I read the other day that adults today experience more stress in a month than their great-great-grandparents did in their lifetime. I don’t know how they actually measure that but if that is true, wow.
The current state of the tremendous economic challenges we are as a nation has created greater tension and emphasis on the need to earn a living. And I don't want to minimize that...but, let me pose this questions: what if things don't improve economically this year as so many are warning, does that mean we wait another year to 'do' the good we can do?
I would argue, no. We only have so many years here on earth, and we can't, we shouldn't, let circumstances, no matter how difficult, dictate the course our lives will follow.
Every generation and every society has had its challenges, but without a doubt it has been those individuals who focused on the bigger picture…the future of their children, grandchildren, the next generation, and the Lord, that were instrumental in bringing about real and lasting change for good.
I love what John Wesley once said...
"Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. to all the people you can. As long as every you can." -John Wesley
So, Rise Up! Take your Stand! 2013 can be a year for real change, that results in the real blessings of life, for our families and communities and nation now, and in the future…if we will rise up and get engaged. You can be a part of shaping culture.
