”Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence." -John AdamsI was thinking the other day, is it just me, or did John Kerry step into the position of Secretary of State with an ease unequal to the controversey surrounding his background and political positions on the issues?
Yes, I know that the nomination of Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense, and John Brennan for CIA Director, took center stage, which helped the Kerry selection receive lesser attention. But still, shouldn't his nomination have stirred up more than it did?
After it was announced that Kerry was Pres. Obama's choice for Secretary of State, I found an article I had written back when he ran for President in 2004, entitled "Truth, Truth, Where Art Thou?" which refreshed my memory of some of the details surrounding his controversial background.Remember the contradiction between his personal war diary and and his approved war biography by Douglas Brinkley...I wrote, "...as reported recently by Art Moore in WorldNetDaily.com. Nine days after Kerry claims to have received his Purple Heart as a result of enemy fire, he wrote in his diary that he had not "been shot at yet." "Brinkley's book, "Tour of Duty", which included information from Kerry's diary, validated the date contradiction, which also seemed to confirm claims made by the Swift Boat Vets for Truth in "Unfit for Command", a book written by John O'Neill who took over the command of Kerry's boat, that the wound was caused by Kerry firing a grenade launcher too close versus from enemy fire." So, were conservatives and the Swift Boat Vets for Truth making a mountain out of a mole hill back then? How about more recently when they revisited their concerns over the Secretary of State appointment?
Should his actions and anti-war sentiment during the Vietnam era, for instance, matter today now that he is Secretary of State?Sure, one can say 'anyone can forget exact dates,' but beyond dates, what about the important records of political and public life? Voting records, House and Senate floor speeches, what is put in writing, and comments made publically.
For instance, when Kerry said to a group of students on October 31, 2006, insulting our Troops, "You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq,” receiving a mixture of laughs and gasps. You can view the video here.Or, how about as a Democrat Presidential candidate when Kerry called our troops terrorists, "And there is no reason, Bob, that young American soldiers need to be going into the homes of Iraqis in the dead of night, terrorizing kids and children, you know, women..."
These 'worldview/attitude' examples, and others, obviously don't appear to matter to the President, or to the mainstream media, or others on the Left. Therefore, we can conclude that Kerry is a perfect match for their 'Secretary of State checklist.' Thus, the media turned on the spin-cycle to help the administration divert to other issues, and voila, Kerry is in!And speaking of that, today we call it 'spin' but in reality it is just a gentler, kinder word for propaganda. A few years ago I gave a speech at a California Eagle Forum education conference about the nature of propaganda. The definition is pretty powerful, and in a nut shell this is what I said:
-In the broadest sense propaganda is information that serves a particular agenda, which could be true or false. -In Latin, propaganda means "propagating." In the more common use, it refers to deliberately false or misleading deceptive information that supports a political cause or the interests of those in power in any institution.-A propagandist seeks to change the way people understand an issue or a situation for the purpose of changing their actions and expectations in ways that are desirable to the propagandist. It includes censorship in which the same purpose is achieved, not by filling people's minds with false information, but by preventing people from knowing true information.
-What sets propaganda apart from other forms of advocacy is the willingness of the propagandist to change people's understanding through deception and confusion, rather than persuasion and understanding.Well, I really don't think anyone who is paying attention is surprised by the ease inwhich John Kerry became Secretary of State. However, the Beltway mentality to 'let the President have the individuals he wants in his cabinet' only escalates the problems we have in our goverrment and nation today. It is sad to see what our system has become, and how far removed we are from the vision and structure our Founding Fathers gave us. But, can things turn around? Yes, if we will work and pray (without ceasing) for men and women of integrity, who have a love for the truth and what is right, to be elected to office who will put their fingers in the dike to hold back the flood of agendas coming at us, from overtaking us. It's happened before. It can happen again. But it will take more of us waking up, and rolling up our sleeves.
As Thomas Jefferson said, "Educate and inform the whole mass of the people...They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty."
