It didn't take long after the movie "Fifty Shades of Grey," hit the charts last month to see whole magazines dedicated to movie, it's scenes, the actors, creators, et al. And many are still asking why so many women went to see it given the fact that it 'glorifies' abuse, in the name of 'submission.'!
The Guardian pointed out that the movie was/is all about abuse...in the name of submissive sex. I am personally glad to find that many WOMEN are speaking out about it, such as Dr. Miriam Grossman MD in her article, "A Psychiatrist’s Letter to Young People about Fifty Shades of Grey," who wrote, "Fifty Shades of Grey is being released for Valentine’s Day, so you’ll think it’s a romance, but don’t fall for it. The movie is actually about a sick, dangerous relationship filled with physical and emotional abuse. It seems glamorous, because the actors are gorgeous, have expensive cars and planes, and Beyonce is singing. You might conclude that Christian and Ana are cool, and that their relationship is acceptable."
It's extremely important to address the very real issue of abuse, if we can ever hope to see it less victims.
Did you know ...
That every 9 seconds a woman is beaten by her husband, partner or boyfriend?
That one out of every 4 women are victims of domestic violence in America today?
That 15-20% of children are victims of abuse in the U.S.?
That domestic abuse is more than just physical harm, but also can be verbal, emotional, mental harm?
Have you every wondered ...
Why so many battered women stay in abusive relationships?
Why many women who are victims of abuse go back to their abuser after leaving?
Why this huge 'epidemic' is rarely talked about in our culture?
What can I do to help someone I know who is in an abusive situation?
Well, I wanted women to wonder no more, and so we held a luncheon a few years ago with expert on Victimology and author of "How to Spot a Dangerous Man," as our guest speaker, Sandra Brown.
Sandra Brown, deals with the hardest cases; wrote "Counseling Victims of Violence: A Handbook for Helping Professionals"; is President of the Institute for Relational Harm Reduction; and publishes Safe Relationships Magazine. (see more bio here)
She did a fantastic job of informing the packed room of women at the Sheraton Hotel in Petaluma, CA, on the very real realities of abuse of women, and the help that is available.
With 1 out of 4 women today victims of domestic abuse, that means you have either been a victim, are a victim or know someone who is! Learn to identify the signals and signs, thus we wanted to make available some of the best resources to those who attended on how to either help someone caught in an abusive relationship, or help themselves.
Part of our vision at WOMANTalk is to see women and children free from abuse and its effects, whether in dictatorial regimes or right here at home; and from sex trafficking in the Red Light district of Calcutta, India or the streets of Santa Rosa, California.
As women, we need to work together to see the 'silent shame' so many women live with...erased. And there's no better time than this month, with the release of "Fifty Shades of Grey."
So, get educated on this issue so you can be an instrument of help to women who are victims; and if you are a victim of abuse, please get help so you can be set free. I highly recommend availing yourself of Sandra Brown's resources which you can find here.
Again, I believe 2015 is the year to get engaged! And there's no better issue than abuse against women to engage in.
