To Corrupt: (Merriam-Webster's Dictionary)
-to change from good to bad in morals, manners, or actions; also: to degrade with unsound principles or moral values
-to become tainted or rotten: to become morally debased
-to cause disintegration or ruin
I ask you...do you think the entertainment industry overall has become corrupt?
How does an industry that is suppose to entertain, become corrupt?
Why can a well-respected and loved movie star such as Meryl Streep talk on and on at the Global Globe Awards, not about her achievments, but attacking the soon to be inaugurated 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, and be praised? (of course, she is not the first Hollywooder to do something like this, just the latest). She is certainly free to have her own opinions about Donald Trump, but to do what she did, where she did it, only proves the point that her industry has been corrupted.
No industry is perfect, but the slide in Hollywood started a while back, when we would/could ask the following questions:
Why did the FCC clear the way for the use of the "F" word on radio and TV any time of the day or night, as long as it isn't used in a sexual context?
Why is sexually oriented programming of all kinds on the the rise, especially in prime time, during sports half-times, etc.?
Why was Mel Gibson raked over the coals in the industry because of his movie, The Passion, by an industry which produced the Ten Commandments, The Robe and other classic, religious films?
I could go on listing examples, but the question is, what is it about this industry that is so easily corrupted...and so easily corrupts...family, faith, decency, etc.? Could it possibly be that a trojan horse entered its gates a long time ago?
Many don't know, and some may have forgotten, that Stalin targeted the entertainment industry as a means of bringing America down. This was something that Ronald Reagan saw and worked hard to expose the Communist activity in Hollywood, when he was on the committee for un-American activities.
'Oh, stop Sharon, that is so last century!' some may be thinking. To which I say, well, it did happen in the last century, but its effects are still at work today. (See "Cultural Marxism" documentary).
Whatever the cause, the current condition is obvious...much of entertainment today is not family-friendly, so we have child safety options on our televisions, iPads and computers...which is a good thing...but how sad we should need them.
Parents who take seriously the responsibility to guard their children when it comes to entertainment, are often faced with the choice of what is the greater danger: your child or teen being unhappy with you because you won't let them watch what their friends watch, or your child being exposed to things their young eyes should not see, nor their minds should not be molded by.
I'm sure we agree that parents are to be the E Police in their family. But what about our culture overall? Who are suppose to be the nation's E Police? That's what the FCC was basically created to be: "It is a violation of federal law to air obscene programming at any time. It is also a violation of federal law to broadcast indecent or profane programming during certain hours." (read more here). But, unfortunately, it has failed to do its job to a great degree. Why? because adults who have been corrupted either don't see, or don't care, about what entertainment molds its audience into.
Jack Valenti, former head of the Motion Picture Association of America, announced...during his keynote speech to the National Association of Broadcasters."We want to tell American parents that they, and they alone, have total power to control every hour of television programming. I tell parents that if you have 100 channels of cable, only 8-10 percent will be affected by anything the FCC and Congress can do," he said.
I know I'm kind of kicking against the pricks here, and at risk of being blamed for being 'old-fashioned,' the truth is that if we think what we, or our children, watch doesn't affect us, we are deluded.
"Put a piece of Play-Doh on a table and it picks up everything. Kids are Play-Doh," said Josephson, founder of the California-based Josephson Institute of Ethics. "They don't even know what they've picked up."
- -72% of teens think watching TV with a lot of sexual content influences their peers’ behavior
- -Programs with sexual content average 4.4 scenes per hour.
- -On average, music videos contain 93 sexual situations per hour, including 11 hard-core scenes depicting behavior like intercourse and oral sex.
- -Between 1998 and 2005, the number of sexual scenes on TV nearly doubled.
- -Watching sexual content on TV and listening to sexually explicit music lyrics increase the chances that a teen will have sex at an earlier age.
- -60% of female video game characters are presented in a sexualized fashion.
- -The biggest users of online pornography are 12-to 17-year-old boys.
In The Psychological Effects of Violent Media on Children it is reported:
"Everything that children see or hear in the media early on in their lives affects them in some way. Positive parenting role models indicate that in the best interest of our children we should limit their exposure to violent acts. Unfortunately, violence is one of the most popular forms of entertainment. Over sixty percent of television shows being shown in prime time contain some form of violence. There are two very opposite sides of this issue. The media who market the violent television, video games and other forms of entertainment argue this is safe entertainment and the others argue that violence promotes violence."
We need to connect the dots between what is happening in our culture and why, or how. I'm talking about broken marriages, pornography addiction, increase in violence, et al.
And we need to remember that entertainment has the ability to cause, even 'seduce,' us to drop our guard. If it can do that to adults, it can certainly do that to children...and affect their lives, forever.
Think about it.
